  • 2. What angle does the Smart Sharp sharpen at?

The Smart Sharp sharpens blades to an exact angle of 20 degrees.

If you have previously sharpened your knife on a whetstone or steel then please note that due to the more freehand nature of these methods, the blade angle on your knives may be uneven or outside typical ranges. Therefore, it may take extra time and perseverance initially for your knife to adopt the new angle. Once achieved, continued use of the Smart Sharp will keep your blades at an even 20 degrees and future sharpening will take a fraction of the time.

The Smart Sharp is an all in one sharpener and is not intended to be used in conjunction with other sharpeners or sharpening methods. This is because sharpening angles on other devices may be different.

  • 4. What is the purpose of each of the Smart Sharp's 3 stages?

Stage 1 - Prepare (Diamond rods) - This initial stage smooths out any nicks & imperfections that could cause the blade to 'catch' during the sharpening stage. It also roughens the knife edge to provide an even surface for sharpening.

Stage 2 - Sharpen (Tungsten Carbide Plates) - Slot 2's precision angled plates then create the perfect sharpened 'V' edge on even the bluntest knife.

Stage 3 - Hone (Ceramic Rods) - This is for final edge honing. It will remove any burs and gently polish the edge of the blade to bring it to its final finish.

  • 7. What knives can be sharpened by the Smart Sharp Knife sharpener?

The Smart Sharp is designed for use with straight edged kitchen knives and wide serrated knives (bread knives) only. When sharpening serrated edged knives please use a light hand pressure only.

Not for use with finely serrated knives, scissors or ceramic bladed knives. We also recommend that the Smart Sharp is not used on specialist Japanese knives - this is due to the much narrower blade angles of these knives.

  • 12. How do I use my Smart Sharp knife sharpener?

Watch our Quick Start Video Tutorial here

    First things first

Place your Smart Sharp on a solid flat surface (we recommend using a chopping board to protect your kitchen work surface/table top). Hold the handle firmly to keep the unit steady.

    Stage 1 – Prepare

Using light pressure and a nice, smooth motion, pull the knife through slot 1 approx 5 times. The knife should move through the slot easily, you shouldn’t feel too much resistance on this stage.

    Stage 2 – Sharpen

Using some additional downwards pressure to your stroke, pull your knife through slot 2 with the same smooth movement, approx 5 times. If you’re sharpening knives for the very first time with you Smart Sharp, repeat this action a few extra times.

TIP - You should feel some resistance on this stage as you pull your knife through. If not, then try pulling the knife through at an increased upwards angle until you feel a definite ‘tug’ as it pulls through. You can also try adding a little more downwards pressure to your stroke too. (This is something you’ll get a feel for over time so you may want to experiment a little at first to get this right!)

    Stage 3 – Hone

Using light pressure and a nice, smooth motion, pull the knife through slot 3 approx 5 times. (As with stage 1, the knife should move through the slot easily)

Wipe your knife and test sharpness. If necessary, repeat the process. Knives that are very blunt or that have previously been sharpened by other methods may take a few extra goes to begin with.

Maintenance - Once your knife is sharp, you can maintain its sharpness for longer by using just Stage 3 (Hone) on every other use.  Only use all 3 stages when it feels like your knife needs a full sharpen.

  • 13. How do I clean my 2 in 1 Safety Can Opener?

With correct use, the opener never touches the food contents – so there is no need to wash the unit each time.

You can clean your 2 in 1 Safety Can Opener by wiping it with a damp cloth. Due to it's small, internal metal parts, we do not recommend cleaning the unit in a dishwasher. For the same reason, do not submerge in water.

    Instructions - Opening Cans

Watch our quick-start video tutorial here

    • Before use, make a half turn of the lever in an anti-clockwise direction. This ensures that the opening mechanism is in the unlocked (open) position.
    • Place the can on a flat and even surface, then slot the wheel of the opener over the rim of can.
    • Begin turning the lever in a clockwise direction. As you do this, you will feel the opener lock onto the rim of the can. Continue to turn the lever clockwise, the can will rotate as the opener cuts around the rim.
    • When you feel a slight ‘jolt’ and lesser resistance from the lever, this signals that you have cut around the full rim.
    • Turn the lever a half turn anti-clockwise to release the opener from lid.
    • Lift the lid away from the can with your fingers to access can contents.
    • The lid fits neatly back onto the can in case you wish to store can contents for later.

Images - opener5 with ‘Turn backwards (anti clockwise) to open mechanism and release lid’ & opener25 – ‘Turn forwards (clockwise) to lock onto can and cut around can rim’

NOTE: With correct use, the opener never touches the food contents – so there is no need to wash afterwards. If you do wish to clean the unit, please wipe clean only with a damp cloth. Not suitable for dishwasher.

    Instructions – Opening Bottles

The Lantana 2 in 1 Safety Can Opener also features an easy to use bottle opener.

    • Place bottle on a sturdy surface and hold it firmly with one hand.
    • Position the steel lip (underneath the head of the opener) under the rim of the bottle cap.
    • Slowly lift the handle, keeping the head of the opener on top of the bottle cap. This motion will lever the bottle cap from off the bottle.

    Cleaning

Wipe Clean Only - Not suitable for dishwasher. Do not submerge in water.

  • 18. How does the 2 in 1 Safety Can Opener work?

The 2 in 1 Safety Can Opener takes advantage of the special way that a food can is sealed. During manufacture, food is first placed within the can and then the lid is placed on top of the can afterwards. The lid edges are then mechanically folded over twice and squeezed very tightly to make an airtight seam that seals the can.

The 2 in 1 safety opener works by cutting through the very outside layer of this folded seam. Making the cut in the seam like this provides several benefits over regular can openers:

    1) The cutting wheel never touches the cans contents, so food hygiene is never compromised. No risk of a dirty can opener passing germs into food.

    2) The position of the cut means that no sharp edges are produced on the lid OR the can, (unlike other sharpeners which cut through the side of the can or into the lid to cause sharp and jagged edges.)

    3) The position that the 2 in 1 opener cuts through the seam means that a convenient lip is left on the can lid - this means that the lid fits snugly back onto the can so that spare contents can be kept covered for later use if needed. (long-term storage of any opened canned foods not recommended - if storing for any more than a few hours, you may wish to transfer to an alternative food container)

    4) Works on most sized food cans and even on cans with awkward ring pull lids – so no more spraying contents over your kitchen when trying to remove stiff ring pull lids!
